Hope and Freedom Missions Trip to Italy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our
congregation is a growing community of believers. Our membership has
increased by 40% (135 new members) in the last seven years, and God
has blessed us to reach out to more and more people. Our mission is
to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to all of God's people. We are
an integrated church serving an integrated community. We are situated
in the Germantown/Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, which has been designated
by a national publication as one of the five best integrated neighborhoods
in America.

Our
congregation strives to reflect this diversity. We are a congregation
of African, European, Hispanic, Asian and Native American descent. We
are proud of our rich history of serving this community since 1866.
We are meeting the needs of a new generation with a dynamic youth group,
JAM (Jesus And Me). We are attracting families of all shapes and sizes,
single parents, blended familes, divorced, widowed, and everything in
between. We invite you to worship with us, and join us as we build up
the body of Christ here at the corner of Germantown and Upsal.

The Second Baptist Library is now back up and running! Come visit the library on the second floor of the church to browse and borrow. The library will be open on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you have any questions or would like to donate books or time, contact Ben Nichols.
Save the Date! Join the Scholarship Committee on Saturday, December 13, 2008 for a special event. More details will be forthcoming.
We have up graded our audio system by adding wireless ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES to aid those who are hearing impaired. If you need to use one of the devices while attending any of our services, please go to the back of the sanctuary where the audio cabinet is located and see the person or persons that are attending to the audio system for that day. They will fit you with a device and show you how to use it. If at all possible, especially on Sunday mornings, it would be good to get to church early before the services start. Thank you. Epiphany Class, a multi-generational forum and discussion group, has chosen a timely and fascinating study for the period September-Thanksgiving. It is called unChristian, by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. It is the result of extensive research by the Barna Group, and the findings are statistically valid--but amazingly, it is quite readable! The sub-title is: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity and Why it Matters. The study is of 16-29 year olds and researches what those outside Christianity think about us “on the inside”. It is not pretty. They think we are un-Christian, as the title suggests. Especially in our strategic planning as a congregation, the insights of this study might be helpful. We offer food to eat as well as spiritual food. 9:30 on Sundays in the conference room. So come try us for this next study!
Sunday, October 5th will be “Sister to Sister Sorority Sunday” at Second Baptist. All members of all sororities are asked to attend the service, invite your sisters, and wear your sorority colors.
Rev. Ernest Flores has written a book, Tempted To Leave the Cross, published by Judson Press. It is a collection of sermons preached at Second Baptist over the last five years that focuses on the cross of Christ.

Or you can just come to Second Baptist one Sunday and get it there. It will be in bookstores soon. Here are some reviews on the book:
"You will be blessed by this book. You will be engaged by this minister’s brilliant mind. You will be challenged by his messages. As a disciple of Jesus, you will come away from the reading of this text with tools to take up the Cross of Jesus and to follow the one who leads us to life more abundant and to life eternal!" —from the Foreword by Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.,Senior Pastor, Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago, Illinois |
