Board of Missions
Our Missions Board
is an innovative and caring group of people for whom the term “Missions”
has many definitions, as is seen through our various missions opportunities.
The board is charged with creating opportunities for the members of
the church to engage in missions work in our community and around the
world.
Missions
Opportunities
Elder Diner: This program provides lunch and opportunity
for fellowship for seniors every Thursday at 12 noon at the church in
Hargroves Hall. The cost is $3 per person and first timers are free.
Set-up, clean up, money management, and meal preparations all are opportunities
to serve.
NPIHN -
The Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Second Baptist hosts up to 5 families or 15 people who have recently
been displaced from their homes as overnight guests in our church facility
for a period of 3 weeks, twice a year. We provide the guests with dinner,
private rooms to sleep, a community room, and outdoor recreation. Volunteers
are needed as overnight hosts, meal preparers, evening dinner hosts,
and more.
Baptist
Women’s Center: We collect and deliver food to the Baptist
Women’s Center every month. A basket is placed in the foyer of
the church for the collection of the food.
Meals on
Wheels: Drivers work with the Meals on Wheels program out of
the Germantown home to deliver hot meals to shut-ins.
Haitian
Feeding Program: Every third and fourth Friday, we prepare
and serve meals for the needy at the Haitian Tabernacle Baptist Church
on Wister Street in the heart of Germantown. Meals include sandwiches,
casseroles, and homemade soup as well as bread and a beverage.
Rising Sun
Manor: We provide support services and encouragement such as
letter writing, card sending, trips to the zoo, Christmas parties, monthly
visits for games, and more for the mentally retarded at Rising Sun Manor.
Missions
Offerings: We annually raise thousands of dollars for four
American Baptist Missions offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, World
Missions, America For Christ, and Retired Ministers and Missionaries.
Our regular missions giving also goes to support American Baptist Churches
USA and its support of missions around the globe.
Missions
Trips: Beginning next summer, we are excited to be able to
organize missions trips on a bi-annual basis to sites around the world.
2006 Missions Trip to Egypt
Dear Second Baptist,
The following email is from our ABC Missionaries to Thailand, Chuck and Ruth Fox. Ruth was with us last year raising funds for their mission by selling some of the items that the Akha people had made. Keep them and all our missionaries in prayer.
Speaking of missions work, our own Jesse Steele and Ron Hevey are finishing up their trip to Guatemala with Buildabridge. Here's a link to the Buildabridge web site where the missions effort in Guatemala is detailed.
Tomorrow, I'll be preaching from the subject, "How Quickly We Forget," from Luke 17. Invite a friend with you to church, and I'll see you there. Sunday School is at 9:30, and Worship is at 10:45 a.m. God bless you all.
